1956 Austin-Healey 100M

This 1956 Austin-Healey 100-4 is 1 of just 640 equipped at the factory with the rare and desirable “M” performance package.  Having recently benefitted from an immaculate concours restoration, the 100M is now listed here on eBay in Santa Barbara, California with the reserve not yet met at $72,000.

Recent years have proven a boon to the venerable Austin Healey 100-4.  Long overshadowed by the larger and more powerful 100-6 and 3000 roadsters, the four cylinder 100-4 is once again being recognized for its elegant styling and fine balance.  The fact that almost all of Austin-Healey’s major racing successes came by way of some iteration of the 100-4 doesn’t hurt its reputation either.

The M package this particular 100-4 bears includes a high-lift camshaft, larger SU carburetors, high compression pistons, a revised intake manifold, a cold air box, a revised distributor, a louvered hood with leather retaining strap, and larger anti-sway bars.  Furthermore, the seller indicates this car’s engine was restored with the strongest, highest-quality components available and stands ready for spirited driving.

Also of note on this particular Austin Healey is the extent of its restoration.  The seller claims that this car was restored without regard for time or cost, and the images would appear to prove this true.  The bodywork shows perfectly smooth panels, fine paint, and consistent gaps; a tricky proposition on the deceptively complex 100-4 body.  The interior as well is better than new with perfect tan leather piped in green over green carpets and the engine compartment is fastidiously clean with factory-correct labels and brass fuel lines.

While most Austin-Healeys offer spirited performance and enduring aesthetics, this 100M provides the added benefits of valuable, historic options and a brilliant restoration.  Combine these with a California Mille, Colorado Grand and Mille Miglia friendly build date of 1956 and this 100M is as well suited to the show circuit as it is for high-speed tours.
