The swinging ’60s provided automotive enthusiasts with more than a few sports car options. Whether you were after American muscle or maybe something a little more Italian, the options were nearly endless. Somewhere in between was the charming British sports car. Low on weight and frills, their (usually) tiny engines displaced small cubic capacities, yet their ability to put smiles on the faces of occupants was without fail.

One of the most recognizable faces to come out of this era was British Motor Corporation’s MG B. With a total of 523,836 cars produced, the B and its close cousins MG B GT and MG C easily outsold their predecessors. Most would agree the prettiest examples from this generation were the cars shod with the shiny chrome bumpers rather than the bulbous impact bumpers that the later cars were burdened with.

The example available today is one of these successful creations. Offered privately from a Sports Car Digest reader, this 1970 MG B Roadster is dressed in the ubiquitous sports car shade of red. The exterior is contrasted perfectly with a handsome black vinyl interior and soft-top. A two-owner car, the current caretaker has enjoyed the car since the spring of 1978. Now showing 82,500 miles, chassis GHN5UA218368 is described as a well documented, matching-numbers example example that has enjoyed a charmed life in Northern California.

The car is described as highly original with matching numbers and color combinations. The seller states the MG is rust-free with its solid, original floors benefitting from further protection with an epoxy undercoating. In 2010 the decision was made to refinish the exterior in its original color with work being carried to a high level that included refinishing door jambs and glass removal for a beautiful finished product. During this process, all water drains were cleaned out, rubber trim replaced and a majority of the hardware on the car replaced with stainless steel. Sharp-eyed readers might note the deletion of the of the exterior accessible fuel filler that cleans up the look of the rear of this B quite nicely.

The seller has prepared this MG to tackle the demands of a hot environment. Its BMC B-series, inline-four cylinder engine is described to run cool and efficiently, while the cylinder head was rebuilt not many years after seller purchased it. Throughout this time the car enjoyed a considerable amount of preventative maintenance including a cooling system overhaul, fuel tank and exhaust replacement, rebuilding the carburetors, stainless-steel braided oil lines, the addition of an cooler and much more.

Its original, all synchromesh 4-speed manual transmission is described to work beautifully, operating as it should. It’s also equipped with electronic overdrive for more relaxing long distance driving. The suspension was overhauled with new springs, shock absorbers, A-arms and bushings. The braking system has also benefitted from a thorough rehabilitation with the brake calipers, rotors and other associated items replaced. New Dayton 15″ chrome wire wheels shod in Michelin Pilot tires were recently added to complete the package. The end result is a MG B that is tight, safe and handles the rigors of modern traffic without issue.

Two things caught our attention when this MG came into our inbox. Its long-term, California ownership and how well-kept the car appears to be. The clean and nicely detailed engine compartment also won us over. With the recent inclusion at top-tier auctions, the MG B has clearly made enough of a case to enthusiasts and car collectors. There are few better and less expensive ways to enjoy a turn-key experience in a British sports car.

Given how few Bs have survived at all, this one is a real find – and to have one with overdrive is a bonus. I don’t mind the vinyl and the gas cap being in the trunk is not a problem. If I had a loose $30Ks I’d buy it.

  2. How few have survived. Theres nearly 18,000 on the road in the UK alone. Thats actually more than was sold in the UK so many must have ben re imported. Nice car, a real beauty.

  3. Nice car should read the owners manual the top will fit over the roll bar.
