The late 1990s were a happening time, with the emergence of new ideas and trends; society was preparing to walk into the unknown with the next millennium, cell phones were only beginning to run our lives, and Porsche was announcing the first of many changes to their model line up. The marque’s faithful followers took note as their beloved 911 model was undergoing radical changes that would take the age-old platform into the 21st century with the use of water cooling and a more cost-efficient overall construction. A few short years later, the first water-cooled 911 Turbo (996-chassis) would enter the world, and to the surprise of many, the outgoing air-cooled models continued holding their value. Contrary to the trend of most used car prices, which generally exhibit a steep decline following the introduction of a new model, purists clung on to these primitive 911s, acknowledging the end of a special era from the brand. The rest, as they say, is history.
From the beginning, the 993-chassis 911 Turbo models have been considered by most to be collector cars, and this has kept some of these cars in the right hands. The Arena Red Metallic example being offered here is one of those examples. This Turbo is being sold privately from a long-time Porsche Club of America member and Sports Car Digest reader whose garage has witnessed everything from 356s to a rare 993 Turbo S, this 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo has lived a charmed life that would take it from California all the way to its current home in North Carolina. The seller has enjoyed the car for the past several years and during that time has continued to improve it.
This final year US 993 Turbo was equipped admirably with an elegant livery that included its Arena Red Metallic exterior color on Classic Grey Supple leather interior. The interior of the car exhibits typical Turbo buyer opulence with nearly $10,000 spent on Dark Rootwood trim ordered new through Porsche Exclusive. Exterior and interior show remarkably well and correspond with the low mileage of the car. The front clip was recently professionally refinished to eliminate evidence of minor stone chips and peppering, otherwise paintwork has been verified as original using a paint meter. Vulnerable areas such as front lid and bumper cover were covered with invisible bra for worry-free use.
Mechanically, the 911 has enjoyed fastidious maintenance during the seller’s tenure that included a major service, valve cover gasket replacement, turbocharger oil supply lines, alternator replacement and considerable money spent sorting the air conditioning. This work and all routine maintenance has been carried out by the air-cooled specialists at Zuffenhaus/Eurowerks and the local Porsche dealership. During the seller’s ownership, subtle updates were also made to help improve the driving experience with original components retained, should someone want to return to original. These include:
- Bilstein PSS10 adjustable coil-over suspension
- Aligned, corner-balanced and ride height set to Carrera RS specification
- Carrera RS adjustable sway bars and drop links added
- Turbo S cooling ducts

When the twin-turbocharged 911 Turbo finally hit the ground, it was heralded as the first series production Porsche that could finally match and even exceed the performance of the mind-bending 959 supercar. Today, its level of performance is still staggering and its old-world craftsmanship is from another time. And who could forget Porsche’s famous “Kills Bugs Fast” marketing campaign that featured virtually the same car?
