Project Etceterini – 1960 Moretti 750 Spider

fiat roadsterMoretti got started in the 1920s as a motorcycle manufacturer and is probably best known to sports car people for their wonderful little machines of the 1950s, but the company survived well into the 1980s by making cars with heavy use of Fiat parts and running gear. Their most celebrated model would have to be the 750, introduced in 1953. Morettis featured a frankly dizzying array of bodies, all of them beautiful, and the twin-cam versions of the 750 found considerable success in small-bore racing. In the later 1950s, Moretti started using more Fiat parts and a single cam “Tour Du Monde” (TDM) model was yet another choice from the ambitious little carmaker.

This car, located in Scottsdale, Arizona, apparently missed the auctions, but it is a very rare 750 Spider TDM. The attractive bodywork is probably by Ghia, and there isn’t much else to tell. If you liked the Fiat 1200 Cabriolet we featured a few days ago, but really want to get your hands dirty, then have a look at this car. It’s hard to say what all is Fiat and what all is Moretti, but since replacement Moretti parts would be near impossible to find, this is going to be a tough one. And if you think the finished product will be worth big bucks when it’s all shiny and new again, think again. A Moretti 750 did sell at RM’s sale in Monaco in 2010, but that car was a twin-cam Berlinetta, a Road & Track test car, and in a whole different league from this little roadster. As they say, rarity doesn’t always mean big value, and even a nice example of this car probably wouldn’t bring much more than $20,000. That’s an appealing market trend for people trying to get some etceterini and some exclusivity in their lives, but it makes for a tough call when deciding whether or not to take the plunge into a big time restoration. It’s definitely not an easy call, but it’s a shame to see a Moretti sitting like this.
