Ouch – 1958 Mercedes-Benz 190SL

restoration project crashHave you ever driven a classic Mercedes-Benz? Have you ever hit a deer? Have you ever hit a deer while driving a classic Mercedes-Benz? Apparently, one person has, resulting in the pretty depressing-looking disfigurement on the front of this poor 190SL. Deer damage isn’t the only problem, either, as there is rust in the fenders and rockers as well as the many telltale signs of a car that’s been sitting for a long time. The seller reports that the original engine and chassis have 122,000 miles and that the engine turns by hand. He also reports that there isn’t any frame damage, and although the car is obviously a big job, it’s relatively complete. It even has a hardtop, but it’s got a big fat dent in the top and what was once presumably red has faded to roughly the color of Barbie’s Dreamhouse.

190SL’s are fetching big, big money these days. Just in the last year, they’ve seen a spike in prices and good examples are fetching well past six figures at auction. This car would make a rewarding and collectible restoration for anyone bold enough to tackle it. Judging by the bids so far, there are quite a few such people.

Check out the 1958 Mercedes-Benz 190SL here on eBay, where bidding has reached $27,200.

  1. Stephen Swain says:

That car needs to be put away in a dry place for parts. It’s toast. 190SLs were boring cars to drive, with that anemic, low-revving little 4-banger and very dull handling.

  2. ^^ he obviously hasn’t driven one ! It’s not a sports car, it’s a sunny day cruise that can bring a smile to anyone’s face 🙂 glad people are bidding, hope someone gives this old girl some new life !!
